Brandon Crawford, my 2004 scouting report

Came across some fun scouting reports I posted on my original local scouting website BCBayAreaBaseball (no longer active), back in 2004, after I had left USF and before I started working in the showcase industry and eventually ending up with the Braves for a two year stretch... My 9-year old son enjoyed this one... Oh, and if you read this, a great takeaway is that this player was a multi-sport athlete, even in high school.  He didn't specialize at an early age and because he didn't, he had athleticism and experience that translated to baseball and gave him a much higher ceiling than others who specialized at an early age.  I believe it and will always believe it and will keep saying it.

Brandon Crawford 6'1"180 L/R
Foothill HS, Head Coach Angelo Scavone
scouted on 3/20/04 & 4/13/04
"Shows a legit SS arm with above average hands. Brandon can make accurate throws on the move because of his feet, which work very well. Makes sense, he is a quarterback, which also translates to his making good decisions in the field. Does a good job of coming through the ball, one of the few local SS's I've seen that does that. Has a good quick release when he needs to, able to catch it and get it to 1st in under 2 seconds from standard SS depth. His ball tracks well to 1B. Offensively, his swing path has flattened out from when I saw him in August. He is now getting good extension in his swing as well and is getting stronger, providing more bat speed, though the swing is still a little long. On 3/20/04 he faced Eric Massingham (who was 87-90) under the lights at James Logan HS and was not overmatched in the least. He needs to continue to work toward a consistent timing mechanism, as he can be a little early to the ball. Has a decent approach/balance and a little above average power right now. Got him down the line in 4.33 & 4.34 in a game on 3/20/04. On 4/13/04 he smoked 3 doubles in a game, all driven hard with solid barrel contact. Brandon keeps getting better and better."

Not a bad scouting eye if I don't say so myself ;-)
